If you are truly concerned about exposure to toxic
chemicals in your home furnishings, you will want to consider purchasing
an organically manufactured pillow in addition to your organic mattress.
It is a well known fact that just about every piece of home furnishing in your home was manufactured with the use of toxic and noxious chemicals. Long after your new pillow has been manufactured and sold to you, it is releasing chemicals into the atmosphere. Have you ever noticed a “new mattress” smell when you were at the mattress showroom browsing? That is not the smell of a clean mattress, but rather the smell of a chemical laden health hazard just waiting to pollute your home with all manner of chemical vapors. Most mattresses and pillows that are made from polyurethane, polyester, and vinyl are treated with chemical fire retardants. Sure, it is a great feeling to know that you aren’t going to spontaneously combust while sleeping, but does the safety really outweigh the risks associated with sleeping on a mattress that is full of toxic chemicals? Organic pillows and mattresses are guaranteed to be free from chemicals that can cause health problems. Manufacturers of organic products are regulated at the state and federal level to help insure that the customer is getting exactly what they are paying for. To qualify as organic, bedding must be produced out of natural, non-synthetic materials that have never come into contact with any synthetic chemicals. To illustrate just how stringent the standards are for organic products, take the example of an organic goose down pillow. To qualify as organic, the goose down in the pillow must come from geese that have been raised on a chemical and pesticide free diet, on land that was free of chemical contamination. The casing used on the pillow must be
manufactured out chemical-free, organic wool, cotton, or linen. No
chemical fire retardants are to be applied to the finished product. An
added benefit to using organic wool in manufacturing pillows and
mattresses is the fact that it is naturally fire resistant. All about memory foam:
